Diving The Hog Heaven Wreck:

Located in Fort Lauderdale, the Hog Heaven Wreck is a mix of various items placed in an area over a span of three years. The main attraction of this wreck dive is the 180-foot Western Barge which was intentionally sunk on September 19, 1986 to become an artificial reef. The Hog Heaven Wreck flipped during its sinking and now rests upside down in 72 feet of water. It’s easy to penetrate with proper training. However, divers must exercise additional caution when penetrating the Hog Heaven Wreck due to it being an older wreck with a lot of sharp, mangled metal.

To help expand the artificial reef, on January 30, 1989 the remains of the Pacific Reef Lighthouse that once stood in the upper keys were added to the Hog Heaven Wreck site. This area is known as the Jungle Gym. In addition to the lighthouse, 200 feet of dredge pipes were added to the site on that same day in January.

The Hog Heaven Wreck is one of our favorite wrecks in Broward County. It’s full of life with schooling fish. In addition, sergeant majors, porkfish, grunts and angelfish, barracuda can be seen here, too.

Due to the various areas of this wreck being spread out over a small area, divers should make a mental note of where the dive boat is tied to, as well as where it’s located as they explore. It’s not uncommon for divers to become disoriented from where the down line is when diving the awesome Hog Heaven Wreck.
